With the aim of mimicking silks physico-chemical properties, here we developed urethane copolymers based on semi-crystalline segments formed by hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) and ethylen glycol (EG), and quaternizable amorphous segments formed by HDI and methylene diethanolamine (MDEA). The polyurethane (PU) amorphous segments provide water solubility in aqueous media upon MDEA quaternization, once the ratio between crystalline to amorphous segments is lower than 4. In the presence of salts, these PUs follow an inverse Hofmeister series, which has been used to synthesize fibers based on the kosmotropic phenomena, analogous to silk fibers formation in nature. These polymers have the potential to be used as waterborne adhesives or drugs encapsulating agents.Downloads
