Abstract

In this work, the effect of adding multiwall carbon nanotubes (NTC) on the crystallization kinetics of poly(lactic acid) was studied. NTC contents of 1 and 3% were employed. The blends were prepared in solution by solvent evaporation. The kinetic parameters were investigated by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). It was found that the NTC were able to effectively nucleate PLLA, with the following consequences: (1) An increase in the crystallinity degree of PLLA with NTC addition and NTC content. (b) The overall crystallization rate increased with the increase of NTC content. When the data  was  analyzed  with  the  Lauritzen  and  Hoffman  theory,  it  was  found  that  the  energy  barrier  for  the  overall crystallization  of  PLLA  decrease  with  NTC  content.  The  Avrami  theory  was  capable  of  fitting  the  isothermal crystallization data in the entire range of conversion to the crystalline state for PLLA and for the nanocomposites.
