Abstract

Titanium based thin films (Ti/S, TiN/S, Ti/TiN/S, S: Substrate) were deposited using DC Magnetron sputtering on 316L stainless steel substrates. Superficial, mechanical properties, interface adhesion and tribological behavior of the obtained compounds were evaluated. Crystalline structure of the obtained TiN was observed by XRD, determining a FCC crystalline structure. Hardness increases with application of a TiN layer (17 GPa), but intrinsic stress and higher fragility causes low adhesion (12 N). Metallic coating possesses predominately plastic behavior with low hardness (7 GPa), but higher adhesion (19N). Wear test were performed by Ball on Disk (BOD), using 440 stainless steel (440SS) and alumina (Al2O3) counterpairs (6 mm diameter), 1N applied load and 10 cm/s speed. Morphological and chemical analyses were performed on the wear tracks and counterpair surface using profilometry and SEM/EDS. Highest wear coefficients were observed in the Ti coatings, due to low plastic deformation resistance and abrasion increasing. Including a TiN layer increases coating load capability, reducing material transferring and improving tribological behavior.
