Abstract

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is mainly produced through suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride (VCM). In addition of the polymerization of VCM side reactions occur. This reactions cause corrosion problems and interfere with the action of dispersing agents. In this work, we used four salts at different concentrations and / or purity to investigate their behavior as a buffer in suspension polymerizations of VMC at semi-pilot scale. It was found that at the concentrations tested, none of the salts formed a buffer system. The variation of salt type and concentration had no significant influence on the reaction kinetics of the PVC synthesis via suspension. The variable with higher incidence final pH of the slurry and the reaction conditions were the average size of PVC particles.
