Abstract

The present article describes the microstructural characteristics of formation and further dissolution of sigma-phase in a S31806 duplex steel. The experimental procedure was carried out  by annealing of sigma-bearing specimens at temperatures within the range from 1173 K to 1323 K. The main results show that the transformation of sigma-phase into ferrite does not longer proceed at temperatures below 1173 K, while the increase of temperature above that level increases the dissolution rate, which reaches completion after heating for 1 hour at 1323 K. During the process the content of austenite remains approximately constant.
